My article today is written in the form of a commentary. I point out that I deliberately reveal my opinion as a citizen, which may not coincide with your opinion. But that's the exciting thing about us humans, precisely that we don't always have to agree, but can still respect each other.
THE NEW TRANSPARENCY
The subject of my commentary is transparency. In politics, transparency is supposed to guarantee the "public comprehensibility of processes in politics/administration". That was yesterday! Today, for some politicians, transparency means revealing showering, eating and vacation habits. A few also disclose their sexual preferences, but that's another topic.
I grew up in the 70s, with strict principles like modesty, honesty and respect. These virtues seem to be worth nothing these days as they are trampled upon. Of course, I also know that corruption is not uncommon in politics. But what has been happening lately makes me angry and speechless at the same time. The meaning of the word transparency in politics seems to be no longer clear to many.
Transparency is dead - long live transparency
For me, transparency in politics means that the people who are paid by my tax money tell me what they do with my money. I don't want to see Ms. von der Leyen explain to me in a video how to wash my hands. But I do want to know what contractual agreements she has made with pharmaceutical giant Pfizer regarding vaccines. I don't want her to hide behind the word "state secret" and withhold important information, because it's my money!
I don't want to know when, how and why Mr. Habeck takes a shower, but why it had to come to a gas levy and where he takes the money from for the "energy flat rate", which supposedly all citizens have received, because it's about my money!
I don't want to know anything about the way in which an old gentleman like the Minister President of Baden-Württemberg cares for his sweaty body with a washcloth. Honestly, I find the idea disgusting, I have to agree with Mr. Kühnert of the SPD for once in my life.
I don't want to know where Mrs. Merkel is vacationing or how her spouses are dressed at the G7 summit; I want to know what politicians are doing with my money. According to the law, they are obliged to be transparent, and by transparency I mean transparency with regard to their political activities and lobbying. I want crystal-clear statements and not banal VIP news.
The transparent person
As a citizen, I am obliged to provide information about my income. But it doesn't stop there, because in recent years I have had to inform complete strangers about my vaccination status. As a journalist, I used to be a lot of things, so I am the proud owner of three full vaccination books. For years, no one cared, not even how I heat or shower. But that has changed. Now I'm a transparent person: Google knows what I buy, Facebook knows who I'm friends with, and Amazon knows what I read.
So while I am totally transparent, that is, transparent, some politicians are not, and this despite the fact that they are paid by my money and manage my money. It's like I don't tell my employer, who pays me, what I'm working on. Thus, I take his money but do not tell him what I am doing for him during my working hours. Any employer would fire me if I did that.
Have politicians forgotten their job?
Why do lawyers in Spain have to fight for the disclosure of the contracts that politicians have signed with the big pharmaceutical companies regarding the Covid vaccines? Why doesn't the EU's Corona Committee (finally some politicians who take their job seriously) get reasonable answers from the CEOs of the pharmaceutical giants? Why don't I, as a citizen, simply receive information about what is happening with my money? Why do I have to file a petition to find out why a Mr. Karl Lauterbach is signing vaccine contracts until 2029 for over two billion, when we have enough vaccine doses according to some politicians' small questions to the Ministry of Health?
Conclusion: I have decided to turn the tables! Meaning that from now on I will be extremely transparent and tell everyone something banal about me to distract from my important secrets. From now on EVERYONE will be told about the color of my underpants (even those who don't care). But if I am asked about important things, I will insist on my privacy and refuse any transparency because of "state secret". But if anyone asks in a particularly intrusive way, I'll tell them I don't remember. And I'll start with that today:
My underpants have the color purple! However, I absolutely can't remember how much my income was in 2021, because as of today I'm “scholz(ing)”.
